Collecting and reporting of environmental monitoring data, in real-time, is a permit requirement for operation of Class V injection wells for stormwater disposal. A photo of the injection field installation is shown below. The elevation of the water table must be controlled in real-time by adjusting the injection rate to the well field.
In karst terrain, this requirement protects the injection site from geohazards that could form without appropriate water table management. In the environmental remediation field, real-time monitoring and reporting of water chemistry enables the remedial system to operate at optimum efficiency. The off-site secure datacenter receives the measurements within five minutes of being taken, and determines whether the measurements comply with pre-set thresholds. If out of compliance, the telemetry system (inset figure at right) sends an electronic notification to a mobile phone/tablet/PC of the condition that requires attention.  The early warning technology enables an early response before the situation reaches a critical status. When time is money, this results in significant cost savings to the end user.
Automation of the data collection and reporting across large sites bring significant labor and equipment cost savings. And the automation of the data collection brings greater consistency to the measurement technique, thereby reducing measurement errors, missing data, and scheduling conflicts. Also the demands on fewer staff doing more work are great, and automation enables the end user of the data to tailor the data collection effort to their needs, rather than being at the mercy of available manpower.
